FIRST NATIONAL FLAG of the UNITED STATES_ Buy American Flags
The National flag of the United States is called the American Flag. The flag is rectangular with the shorter part of the rectangle being the vertical side. It has 13 alternating red and white stripes flowing horizontally along the length. The 13 stripes represented all the colonies that declared independence from Great Britain. These 13 States were the first States to be incorporated into the Union at the Declaration of Independence in July 1776
The top and bottom stripes are red. In the upper left hand corner is a navy rectangle and inside this are sewn white 5 pointed stars which represent al the current States that exist.
This rectangle is called a canton and together with the stars is called the Union, Currently there are 50 stars in the canton. These are laid out as 9 rows of alternating a 6 star row with a 5 star row respectively and so on. Stars are added on the first 4th July following the acceptance of any new state. This has been the case since 1818 and one star represents one State. The most number of stars added in any one year was in 1890 when 5 states were added
The Latest design was adopted in 1960 and has 50 stars in all with the incorporation of Hawaii into Union of the flag of the United States.
There were no official regulations to produce the flag to till the beginning of the 1900’s so variations came into being which made the journey so interesting. There are variations of the National Flag that are laid down in history and shown below are two.
